What makes an e-scooter legal in Australia?
Two things. Your state has to allow privately owned e-scooters in public, and the scooter must be in the legal class: it cannot be able to go faster than 25 km/h, or it must be lockable to 25 km/h. Each state then sets its own speed caps, places you can ride, minimum age and helmet rules.
My scooter goes faster than 25 km/h. Can I still ride it?
Only if it can be locked to 25 km/h or less and you ride it that way. A scooter that cannot be limited is outside the legal class everywhere in Australia and is for private property only.
Can I ride a private e-scooter in NSW or the NT?
Not in public at the moment. NSW and the NT only allow shared hire e-scooters in approved areas. A private scooter can be ridden on private property with permission.
